A green flag in Formula 1 signals that the hazard which previously caused caution — typically yellow flags — has been cleared and racing can resume normally. When green flags are waved, drivers can once again push to the limit and overtaking is permitted. Green flags may be shown at the specific marshal post where the hazard has been cleared, or they may be used at the start of a formation lap or after a safety car period to signal the resumption of racing conditions.
Example: Green flags are showing at turn seven — the stricken car has been cleared and the drivers are free to push again.
A green flag does not start the race — that is signalled by the lights sequence going out. A green flag specifically cancels a previous warning or restriction and signals that normal racing conditions have returned.
