The halo is a titanium safety device fitted above the cockpit of every Formula 1 car, forming a curved protective bar around the driver’s head. It was introduced in 2018 following years of research and testing and is now mandatory in F1 and other single-seater categories. The halo is designed to deflect large debris and protect the driver’s head in the event of a rollover or impact with another car or barrier. Despite initial controversy over its appearance, it has since been credited with saving multiple drivers’ lives.
Example: The halo took a direct impact from the debris — without it, the outcome of that accident could have been very different.
The halo does not fully enclose the cockpit — it is an open structure that protects the top of the head while still allowing the driver to exit the car quickly in an emergency.
