The MGU-H, or Motor Generator Unit — Heat, is a component of the Formula 1 hybrid power unit. It recovers energy from the exhaust gases passing through the turbocharger and converts it into electrical energy that can either be stored in the battery or used immediately. It also controls turbo speed to eliminate turbo lag. The MGU-H is extremely complex and expensive to develop. It is being removed from Formula 1 from the 2026 season as part of a major power unit regulation change.
Example: The MGU-H failure has cost him significant power — the turbo is now uncontrolled and the car is down on performance.
The MGU-H is not the same as the MGU-K. The MGU-H deals with heat energy from the turbo, while the MGU-K deals with kinetic energy from braking.
