Stewards are the official judges appointed by the FIA to oversee a Formula 1 race weekend and enforce the sporting and technical regulations. There are typically four stewards at each event, including one former grand prix driver. They investigate incidents reported to them — such as collisions, track limit violations, or ignoring flags — and decide whether a penalty is warranted. Stewards can issue time penalties, grid penalties, drive-through penalties, or disqualifications. Their decisions are final unless formally appealed.
Example: The stewards have called both drivers in for a hearing — they want to review the footage of that incident before making a decision.
