Venturi tunnels are shaped channels built into the underside of a Formula 1 car’s floor that accelerate air as it passes through them. As air is forced into a narrowing channel, it speeds up and its pressure drops — this is the Venturi effect. The low pressure created beneath the car generates a powerful suction force that pulls the car towards the track, providing downforce. Venturi tunnels were a central feature of the ground effect cars introduced with the 2022 F1 regulations and produce a large proportion of a modern car’s total downforce.
Example: The team’s floor design centres around the Venturi tunnel geometry — getting that shape right is what defines their entire aerodynamic concept.
