A black flag is the most severe flag signal in Formula 1 and means a driver has been disqualified from the race and must immediately return to the pits and retire. It is shown alongside a board displaying the driver’s race number. Black flags are rare and are only issued for serious rule violations that cannot be resolved with a time penalty. Ignoring a black flag can result in additional sanctions from the FIA stewards.
Example: There’s the black flag for car number seven — he’s been disqualified and must return to the pits immediately.
The black flag disqualifies a driver from the race, whereas a black-and-white flag is a warning for unsportsmanlike behaviour — these are two different flags.
