ADUO stands for Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities. It is a regulation introduced by the FIA to help lower-ranked teams close the performance gap to the front of the field. Teams that finish lower in the Constructors’ Championship at the end of a season are granted greater freedom to develop and upgrade their cars the following year, while leading teams face tighter restrictions. The system is designed to prevent the fastest teams from simply widening their advantage during the season and to promote closer competition across the grid.
Example: The lower-ranked teams will benefit from ADUO heading into next season — they have more room to develop their cars than the front-runners.
ADUO is not the same as the cost cap. The cost cap limits how much teams can spend; ADUO controls how many development and upgrade opportunities teams can use. They are separate but complementary tools for promoting competitive balance.
