Setup refers to all the adjustable mechanical and aerodynamic settings on a Formula 1 car that engineers configure for a specific circuit and conditions. This includes wing angles, suspension stiffness, ride height, brake bias, and tyre pressures, among many others. The right setup makes the car fast, balanced, and easy for the driver to manage over a race distance. Teams spend much of their time in free practice finding the best setup before qualifying. Once parc fermé begins, most changes are no longer permitted.
Example: They’ve made a significant setup change overnight — the car was too stiff in the high-speed corners and the driver was struggling for confidence.
Setup does not mean the same as aero package. Aero package refers to the aerodynamic components chosen for a weekend; setup covers all the adjustments made to those and other systems to optimise the car’s behaviour.
