DNF stands for Did Not Finish. It is used in race results to indicate that a driver started the race but was unable to complete it, usually due to a mechanical failure, crash, or collision. A DNF means the driver scores no points for that race. DNFs can be costly in a championship battle, particularly if a title rival finishes and scores heavily. A driver is only classified as a DNF if they fail to complete a minimum percentage of the race distance.
Example: That’s a DNF for Leclerc — an engine failure has ended his race after just twelve laps.
A DNF is different from a DNS (Did Not Start), where the driver never began the race at all, typically due to a problem during qualifying or on the formation lap.
