Dry tyres are the standard Formula 1 tyres designed for use on a dry race track. They have a smooth surface with no tread pattern, which maximises the amount of rubber in contact with the track for grip. Dry tyres come in three compounds for each race weekend — Hard, Medium, and Soft — each offering a different balance of grip and durability. Using dry tyres in wet conditions is extremely dangerous as they cannot displace water and lose grip almost entirely.
Example: The track is drying out and we’re seeing teams switch from intermediates back onto dry tyres.
Dry tyres are sometimes called slicks because their surface is completely smooth — this smooth surface is what gives them their superior grip in dry conditions.
