Intermediate tyres are a type of Formula 1 tyre designed for damp or drying track conditions where full wet tyres would be too aggressive and dry slicks would provide insufficient grip. They have a tread pattern that clears a moderate amount of water from the road surface and are marked with green lettering. Intermediates are often considered the most versatile wet-weather tyre. The decision of when to switch from intermediates to slicks — or vice versa — is one of the most critical and difficult calls in a wet race.
Example: The track is drying rapidly — it looks like it’s almost time to switch from intermediates to dry tyres.
Intermediate tyres are not simply a lighter version of full wet tyres — they are designed for a different type of surface condition and are actually the more commonly used wet-weather tyre in F1.
