Wet tyres — also known as full wets or extreme wet tyres — are specifically designed for heavy rain conditions where the track is flooded or the standing water is too deep for intermediate tyres to cope with. They are marked with blue lettering and have a deep tread pattern that can displace large amounts of water per second. Full wets provide maximum aquaplaning protection but generate less heat than other compounds, making them difficult to keep at the right temperature. They are only used in the most severe wet conditions.
Example: They’ve switched to full wet tyres — the rain has been so heavy that the intermediates just aren’t clearing enough water.
Full wets are not simply used whenever it rains — intermediates are actually used more frequently in wet conditions. Full wets are reserved for genuinely heavy rainfall where intermediates would be dangerously inadequate.
